Our investment in cutting edge 2D and 3D fabrication lines along with robotic welding cells enable constant throughput and material handling of high-volume rail and post fit-ups. Not only does this technology permit efficient production of standard configurations, it also allows Marcon to engineer integrations within conventional protective rail design.
We are able to produce bridge and suicide prevention railings, highway and parkade barriers and slope stabilization netting on-time and to code. And, we can accommodate specialized material treatments, including finishes, paint, coatings and galvanizing.

Barrier Design In Detail
Marcon leverages a combination of robotic and manual welding capacities for large-scale production and intricate assembly requirements. As a testament to these hybrid capabilities, we were commissioned in 2017 to supply and install 1.7-million pounds of cross bracing, 20-kilometers of pedestrian and passenger protective railing and 11,000-meters of wall flashing to the South West Calgary Ring Road (SWCRR) project. This 101-kilometer network of free-flowing traffic, required close collaboration with a consortium of leading Canadian constructors to build out protective systems across 31-kilometers of highway, 49 bridges and 14 interchanges.
To ensure the safety of pedestrian travel while maintaining structural aesthetics, Marcon has engineered detailed improvements upon conventional handrail design. Our integrated LED handrails utilize our tube lasers to channel light strips within the rail—rather than exposed at the surface—to protect from pedestrian wear and natural weathering. These innovations along with our expertise in bridge rehabilitation have granted Marcon the opportunity to collaborate with leading builders and retrofitters on new and legacy structures.
Where transportation infrastructure channels through tight terrain and complex corridors, Marcon is often consulted to supply high-tensile steel wire nets to ensure safe passage. These configurations include rockfall protection, slope stabilization and avalanche prevention. In addition to the protection systems fitted along the picturesque Sea to Sky Highway to Whistler, Marcon has collaborated with stabilization firms, including global leader Geobrugg, to supply rockfall and avalanche mitigation netting for Parks Canada. These systems reduce preventative maintenance, keep roadways open and allow regrowth around pre-existing slide pathways.
